Get Rid of this DUMB advertising
Mon Jun 18, 2007 at 07:19:23 PM PDT
What is this about Hillary, Monica and a picture of Angelina Jolie? Can't we be a little more discriminating about the advertising on this site. This is totally offensive.
Fleet Assembles off Pakistan. Who will speak up?
Sat May 26, 2007 at 03:14:24 PM PDT
Truthout this afternoon quotes the Kabul Times -- via Reuters -- as saying that a "flotilla of U.S. ships entered the Gulf on Wednesday in a dramatic show of military muscle" which is, the report goes on, "greatly alarming news for the whole region lest America invade Iran and create a blood bath of its people and another quagmire for itself."
We've seen the Bush Administration stonewall the G8 meeting, attempt to push around the World Bank, subvert the consitutional perogatives of the elected assemblies of the people in the investigation of the Attorney General, and manipulate Congress and the media to obtain funding for Iraq tied to a benchmark that results in the privatization of ...
How Much of Clinton Criticism is Sexist?
Sun Feb 18, 2007 at 10:19:47 AM PDT
I was very interested in the "stand up" guy Rudi Guiliani on Larry King the other night. Larry says, "Rudi, now what about Bernie?" and Rudi says, "Larry, I made a mistake. I've made a lot of mistakes in my life, and this is one 'em." Now what a stand up guy Rudi is.
But does the same rule apply to Senator Clinton? I have a little bit of reasoned discussion on this topic below. Let's be academic about this, OK?
The Big Winner at the DNC meeting
Sun Feb 04, 2007 at 07:52:41 AM PDT
There have been several diaries on the mtg of the Democratic National Committee on Friday (and Saturday, too!). I was proud to be a Democrat and to be a member of the party that had brought forth these extraordinary leaders. We, all of us, were the winners in DC at this meeting -- and believe me, it felt terrific.
But in my view, the record, which is still unfolding, will show that Howard Dean won what he started 4 years ago at this same meeting. Do you remember what he said?
Is Howard Dean Really At Risk?
Sun Nov 19, 2006 at 06:08:09 PM PDT
I thought this was over. I thought we all understood that Carville was a total nut and that this thing was not going to happen. There was a post here that even Joe Biden had come out in favor of Howard's 50-State strategy and his administration of the DNC. There was a post here analyzing the foolishness of the Carville drivel, showing clearly that there might have been as much as 6 seats that were in play. We do not have the post that shows how incredibly much DCCC money Rahm Emmanuel dropped for idiosyncratic reasons on his personal (ie, support his foreign policy) reasons.
But this is not over? What's the story?
Inside the Changing Room with the Ladies!
Thu Nov 02, 2006 at 06:27:05 AM PDT
The oft repeated wisdom is simple:
When Women Vote, Democrats Win! But women, especially young women in the 18-34 range (did I make that a big enough range?) are/have been underrepresented in the final tally.
Here in NY State, the Eleanor Roosevelt Legacy Committee has attacked that problem and you should see this in action! People (many people, the women I've talked to anyway) love it!
I've got the link to the TV ad below.

... body armor for Iraq troops? How do I research this?
Or perhaps someone has the facts and the cites at hand?
I need the facts. I am so moved by the Iraq Vets ad that I am personally going to do something about it. But I need the votes, the roll call, the reference!
My Letter to Sen George Mitchell, Chm, Disney Co
Fri Sep 08, 2006 at 06:38:57 AM PDT
Following the suggestions on the site last night from Kos and others, I wrote the email attached below the clip to George Mitchell, formerly the much respected Democratic Senator from the State of Maine, who is now Chairman of the Board of the Disney Company. My effort was to suggest to the Chairman the legal and financial reasons the board should intervene in this matter.
Steve Jobs should get our attention!
Thu Sep 07, 2006 at 04:52:21 AM PDT
The various emails that I have received all suggest writing to Steve Iger, the president of ABC TV.
Last night we talked about another idea. I am reposting here at the suggestion of one of the comments and I'm including some material that came out in our discussion.
Steve Jobs is the single biggest shareholder of ABC. Steve Jobs' Pixar is distributed by Disney. Steve Jobs is (with the purchase of Pixar by Disney) the largest individual shareholder in the Disney corporation with 138 million shares.

I think if Steve Jobs understood what the internet community felt about this documentary, he might exert some influence.

My son travelled throughout Latin American in the early years of this decade, and lived for two years in Buenos Aires. He offers the following perspective on developments in Cuba. Below the fold is his commentary and analysis.
Bill Clinton; Al Gore; John Kerry - These guys are not heroes
Sun Jun 04, 2006 at 09:09:54 PM PDT
In the wake of An Inconvient Truth, and in anticipation of the coming presidential cycle, we think back about the legacy of the Clinton Adminstration and President Clinton and Vice-President Gore.
I think that many of us conclude that while they made constructive contributions to the general welfare, they were not and are not outstanding, transformational, issues oriented leaders. And this problem weighs on us today.

The Most Important NYT Article Ever -- Really
Sat Apr 29, 2006 at 01:06:05 PM PDT
This Sunday (April 30, 2006), the NYT Magazine has an article on page 15 entitled "Freud and the Fundamentalist Urge" by Mark Edmondson. The subtitle is: "On the 150th anniversarey of Freud's birth, his late writing on politics have a new urgency." This is a spectacularly thoughtful piece that can be helpful to many of us who have thought about fundamentalism, the rise of nazi tendencies in this country, and the problem of remaining a functioning human being in this society.
This article may be posted on the NYT site later, and if it is, I will return to update this diary with the post. [
Here is the link but it may require a login.] But let me quote a few short sentences below ...
Military Involvment --> Military Coup! Details here ...
Tue Oct 04, 2005 at 08:26:25 PM PDT
Military coup in the United States? Unthinkable?
Except that in 1992, Charles Dunlap -- a distinguished military judge whose background is available
here (go to the bottom of the page) wrote a "National War College student paper that was co-winner of the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff 1991-92 Strategy Essay Competition, in which students from all the senior service colleges compete." The judge (or one of the judges) on this winning paper was Colin Powell.
The letter that follows takes us on a darkly imagined excursion into the future. A military coup has taken place in the United States--the year is 2012--and General Thomas E. T. Brutus, Commander-in-Chief of the Unified Armed Forces of the United States, now occupies the White House as permanent Military Plenipotentiary. His position has been ratified by a national referendum, though scattered disorders still prevail and arrests for acts of sedition are underway.

November - 1938: What did you know? And when did you know it? And why didn't you see it more clearly for what it was ... ?
Can you imagine yourself in Munich, in the fall of 1938? You're a successful businessman or lawyer. You live in a sturdy house and you have a nice life. Your children are in school and your wife is active in the Catholic church. It's a beautiful, crisp day and you've had a lot of work - disputes to be resolved, issues in the office. And you've heard that your kids need to be working harder in school. And your wife wants to talk with you about some community issue and whether you can go skiing this winter like you've done the past several winters.
That's where you are. And how do you know, on November 9th, 1938 - that this is the afternoon before Kristallnacht?

OH-2: Match and raise you $10 -- so what else?
Tue Jul 26, 2005 at 06:09:20 AM PDT
Kos notes in his diary on OH-2 that he personally contributed, and while he's not making a broad call for donations, I think that's leadership. I'll match and raise you $10, for a total of $110!
(And I added $0.01 -- so they'd know where it came from!)
So, Kos, what's the next move?
(Rhetorical line, actually addressed to the whole community, but it helps to have a point of focus for my note!)
Remember, this is Ohio the Corrupt and as you point out, this is an especially Republican district. We have learned from 2004 that it isn't productive to flood a district with "foreign" workers, so we have to leave the on-the-ground organizing to the candidate and his team -- and we have to get them the money they need to get the job done.
But what else can we do? (My top 10 list! More Below ... )
What's the story in Oklahoma and Michigan
Thu Jul 14, 2005 at 10:49:31 AM PDT
CNN reports that no-one is interested in the Wilson/Plame issue in Oklahoma and Michigan.
Here's the quote ...
A survey of more than a dozen Republicans who live outside Washington found most siding with the White House. "It's a tempest in a teapot," said Denzil Garrison, former state GOP leader in Oklahoma.
"I have not heard a person bring it up in Michigan," said GOP consultant John Truscott of Lansing, Michigan. "It's just not an issue out here."
Being originally from Oklahoma and having friends in Michigan, I sort of doubt that. Is there some way to make some "non-beltway noise" on this matter? Are there reports or ratings or other factoids available to circulate on the awareness and interest of citizens of these two fine states?
Blogging about Blogs and Why Blogs are Important!
Tue Jun 21, 2005 at 08:34:00 AM PDT
EURO RSCG Worldwide is what used to be known as an ad agency/pr firm. They are a subsidiary of HAVAS, which is the world's sixth largest "communications group" -- which I think also means ad agency. They have just done a study on journalists and journalism directed by Prof Steve Ross at the Columbia School of Journalism. This study surveyed 1200 journalists and found out that 51 percent of them use weblogs regularly for such things as leads, sources, story ideas and so on. The press release is
here. And there is more below.
